Behavior Problems among Children of Mothers with Mild Intellectual Disability: The Role of Maternal Sensitivity, Trauma History, and Intelligence

Children of parents with intellectual disability (ID) are at risk behavior problems, but few studies have systematically examined contributions from caregiving and contextual factors. This cross-sectional matched comparison study whether the children display elevated analyzed maternal sensitivity experiences abuse, trauma maltreatment (ATM). The roles child intelligence were also examined. Participants 26 mothers mild ID their (mean age = 79 months; 58% boys), socioeconomically dyads. Child problems assessed ratings, structured observations, ATM semi-structured interviews. Maternal was measured a subtest Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-III), IQ-screen in Leiter-R. had higher ratings on psychosomatic, anger, hyperactivity, total not anxiety. Sensitivity negatively associated problems. positively linked to anger unrelated low marginally predicted Inclusion equity for require that clinical practice boost sensitivity, especially among who experienced ATM.
